One swallow doesn’t make a summer but to beat England’s touring cricket team recently and clinch the test series which is ranked among the top three or four teams in the cricket world today was certainly no mean achievement. It is going to boost up the sagging morale of our boys who had not tasted victory for quite sometime now.
Time was when our team had been blessed with captain like Abdul Hafeez Kardar who was respected and feared by the team players at the same time. He was an average all rounder but was a strict disciplinarian who brooked no nonsense on the field, in the dressing room as well in the hotels where his boys used to stay while on foreign tours. It was he under whose stewardship we beat almost all the leading cricket teams of the world on their home grounds and thus established our identity in the cricket world. Only test matches used to be played then. Another notable feature of yester years was that every skipper used to pen a book at the conclusion of foreign tour in which noteworthy incidents on the field and in the pavilion were faithfully recorded. One remembers Kardar’s wonderful book billed as Under the green canopy written by him after the visit of our team to West Indies back in 1957 in which he recorded very interesting happenings on the ground.
Those were the days when TV hadn’t arrived in this country and it was the duo of Omar Qureshi and Jamshed Marker who broadcast running commentary of test matches on Radio Pakistan. It was a treat to listen to their commentary and many persons of our generation learnt the art of speaking correct and grammatical English by listening to them . Jamshed Marker later on joined the Foreign office and served as our ambassador in many countries. He also wrote a book captioned Memoirs of a diplomat. Omer Qureshi used to write a sports column in English dailies as long as he lived. The likes of these two broadcasters weren’t heard by us since long.

NEW DELHI: India’s foreign minister will lead a delegation to Pakistan to attend a regional summit, an Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Friday.
This will be the first trip by an Indian foreign minister to its western neighbor since 2015.
External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will be visiting Islamabad to attend the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of Government on Oct. 15-16, said ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
The visit came amid persistent tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, following India’s unilateral decision to strip the disputed Jammu and Kashmir valley of longstanding special status in August 2019.
In response, Islamabad had downgraded its diplomatic relations with New Delhi.
Last year, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also traveled to India to attend the SCO Foreign Ministers’ summit in the resort city of Goa. That was the first trip to India by any Pakistani foreign minister in over a decade.
In 2018, India also sent two ministers during the inauguration of the Kartarpur Corridor in Pakistan for Sikh pilgrims from neighboring India.
In 2016, then-Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited Islamabad for the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation’s (SAARC) Home Minister’s meeting.
In December 2015, then-Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj visited Pakistan.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited India to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in May 2014.
Both the visiting Muslim scholar from India, Dr Zakir Naiq and the JUI Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman have made same suggestions about Palestine tragedy but in different words for stemming the tide of Israeli barbarism on the Palestinians which has shamed Hitler’s acts of barbarism during the second world war.
Zakir Naiq wants setting up of an organization by the Muslim countries on the pattern of NATO so that if any foreign country attacks any member country of that Organization it should be considered as an attack on all the countries grouped in that Organization while Maulana Fazlur Rehman wants that Saudi Arabia should take initiative in the matter along with Turkey and start effort to put meat on that idea .
Granted that on the face of it this idea isn’t bad but it is easier said than done. The six million dollar question is who will bell the cat and in the process incur animosity of Uncle Sam.
At the moment no leader having the courage and charisma of ZA Bhutto, Jamal Abdul Nasir, Imam Khomeni, Soekarno or for that matter Castro is around who could look into the eyes of Uncle Sam and take initiative in the matter.
Isn’t it a fact that leaders like Bhutto, Jamal Nasir, Shah Faisal, Qazafi and Castro were thrown out of their office because they grated on Uncle Sam as they refused to toe the line of Washington.

An age old idiom says a judge shouldn’t be a speaking judge. Whatever he wants to say he should say it through written verdict. He had better not indulge in verbal brawl with the Defence Counsel during the course of legal proceedings in the the Court Room as chances are that advertantly or inadvertently or through a slip of the tongue he might utter any word from which the listeners may easily draw a conclusion as to which side is he on. During the famous trial of famous murder case against against ZA Bhutto in the High court due to unnecessary verbal duel between the then Judges and Defence Lawyers and off the cuff remarks of some honorable judges trying that case many political observers then had beforehand drawn the conclusion as to which way the case was moving.
Lately, it has been also observed that the much needed coordination between the bench and the bar in the higher courts of the country is also missing which is unfortunate to say the least Lawyers and judges are like the two wheels of a car If one wheel develops some defect the car won’t move. Unnecessary and unwarranted exchange of hot and sardonic words between the honourable members of the bench and the bar need to be avoided in the interest of quick dispensation of justice to those seeking justice as justice delayed is justice denied .

GENEVA: The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross sounded the alarm over the blatant disregard shown for the Geneva Conventions in conflicts worldwide, in an interview published Sunday.
Mirjana Spoljaric called on countries to urgently recommit to respecting international law in an interview with Swiss daily Le Temps.
International humanitarian law (IHL) was being “systematically trampled underfoot by those who lead military operations,” she said.
She pointed to “the number of wounded and dead during the conflicts in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine,” which she said was “beyond our imagination.”
The ICRC is the caretaker of the Geneva Conventions which strives to act as a neutral intermediary in conflicts.
But it was finding its access to populations in need “increasingly constrained (and) instrumentalized,” said Spoljaric.
It is “indispensible to act now,” she said, in support of international humanitarian law — the function of which is to limit the effects of armed conflict and protect civilians.
On Friday the ICRC launched an initiative with six countries — Brazil, China, France, Jordan, Kazakhstan and South Africa — in a bid to galvanizing political support for IHL.
The Geneva Conventions, adopted in 1949 in the wake of World War II, “embody humanity’s shared conscience, values that transcend borders and creeds,” they said in a joint statement.
“Yet, the suffering we witness today in armed conflicts around the world is proof that respect for and compliance with their most fundamental rules are not being upheld.”
The initiative will strive to develop concrete recommendations for ways to prevent IHL violations and promote increased protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, said the IHRC.
It is working toward a high-level international meeting in 2026 focused on how to “Uphold Humanity in War,” ICRC said.
“The current situation is extremely dangerous,” said Spoljaric. “The trauma created by ongoing conflicts risks haunting us for decades.”
She added: “The idea is not reinvent the Geneva Conventions, which remain solid legal texts, but to urge States to apply them.”
“Countries must make the implementation of IHL a political priority.”
WNAM REPORT: This tenth International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons arrives at a troubling moment.
Growing geopolitical divisions and mistrust are driving tensions to new heights. Instead of dialogue and diplomacy being deployed to end the nuclear threat, another nuclear arms race is taking shape, and saber-rattling is re-emerging as a tactic of coercion.
We need to stop the madness before it’s too late. On this important Day, the world must deliver a clear and united message: the only way to eliminate the nuclear threat is to eliminate nuclear weapons.
Disarmament and non-proliferation are two sides of the same coin. Progress in one spurs progress in the other. States must pursue both as a matter of urgency.
Nuclear weapon States must lead the way by honoring their disarmament obligations, and committing never to use nuclear weapons under any circumstances, or threaten to do so.
The treaties and instruments that seek to prevent the spread and testing of nuclear weapons and bring about their elimination need to be reinforced and adapted to meet today’s challenges, including to address technological changes that could increase the threat.
Just days ago, the Summit of the Future — and the Pact for the Future that emerged — resulted in a new global commitment to revitalize the global disarmament regime, and bring our world closer to our goal of total elimination of nuclear weapons.
Our future hangs in the balance. Let’s eliminate these weapons from our world for good.
