Baku ( WNAM MONITORING ): The 2020 Patriotic War saw the Azerbaijani people and army demonstrate unparalleled heroism and unity, liberating territories occupied for decades. This historic victory was not only a triumph for territorial integrity but also a celebration of national identity, justice, and state-building. Today, Karabakh and East Zangezur are no longer defined by destruction and memories of war, but by development, reconstruction, and hope for a vibrant future.

The restoration and development of these liberated territories are among Azerbaijan’s top priorities, reflecting the nation’s moral revival, unity, and determination. Under the leadership of President and Victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, extensive reconstruction projects are rapidly revitalizing these areas, breathing new life into regions long scarred by occupation. This process goes beyond economic progress – it encompasses the restoration and global promotion of Azerbaijan’s cultural and historical heritage.

In July alone, over 500,000 people visited the liberated territories – a significant indicator of the region’s transformation. This figure includes not only returning locals and former IDPs, but also international tourists, entrepreneurs, investors, cultural figures, and media representatives. Their presence underscores the safe, modern, and dynamic environment now thriving in these areas. Visitors are drawn not only for tourism, but also to explore living, investment, and business opportunities, signaling the region’s growing economic, cultural, and tourism potential.

Economic revival is driven by advancements in agriculture, industry, and services, supported by state-led infrastructure projects and a favorable investment climate. These efforts attract both domestic and foreign investors, fostering job creation and social welfare. Tourism has also become a key driver of economic growth in the region.

The hosting of the 17th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in Khankendi this July exemplifies the tangible progress in the liberated territories. President Ilham Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s large-scale infrastructure projects, the “Great Return” Program facilitating the return of former IDPs, and the country’s political resolve in the post-conflict period. He emphasized Azerbaijan’s contributions to environmental initiatives, investment attractiveness, energy security, and transport corridors – reinforcing the country’s role as a guarantor of regional stability and sustainable development.

The 3rd Global Media Forum in Shusha further affirmed the city’s rising international prominence as Azerbaijan’s cultural capital. Beyond uniting media representatives, the forum showcased Karabakh’s rich history, cultural heritage, and artistic traditions to the global community. Attendees, including journalists and experts from various countries, witnessed the region’s revival firsthand – strengthening intercultural dialogue and international cooperation. Shusha is emerging as a unique cultural, political, and spiritual hub for the region.

Recent visits by Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov, and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Azerbaijan – particularly its liberated territories – during the ECO Summit highlight the deepening friendship, solidarity, and mutual support among the nations. These visits open new prospects for political and economic integration, marking a milestone in strategic partnerships with these countries.

The Vaqif Poetry Days, held again in Shusha, celebrate Azerbaijan’s deep cultural roots through the legacy of poet Molla Panah Vaqif, embodying the nation’s spirit of freedom and independence. Such cultural events underscore that the liberated territories are undergoing not only material but also spiritual revival.

The extensive projects in these territories – every new road, school, and economic zone – represent confident, strategic steps toward a sustainable future. Karabakh and East Zangezur are becoming hubs of opportunity, innovation, and socio-economic revival. Each infrastructure project, social initiative, and cultural event reflects the collective strength and unity of the Azerbaijani people. The restoration of these territories is not merely a return to physical spaces but a triumphant reaffirmation of national identity, historical justice, and Azerbaijan’s sovereignty – embodying a powerful vision of confidence, determination, and national unity for the future.
