In parliamentary democracies the best of the best persons in the society ought to be elected to federal and provincial assemblies. We betide those people whose parliamentarians are not men of impeccable financial integrity,who make laws that benefit only the elite class of the country and ignore the interests of those teeming millions who don’t know where their next meal would come from. Many people aver that since credentials of those who are contesting polls for parliament in a way are subjected to public scrutiny during voting therefore strictness should not be observed by the returning officers while having a look at their nomination papers. This plea doesn’t hold much water. The power to legislate cannot be given to the persons who are not of impeccable financial integrity,who obtain loans from banks while using their political clout and then manage to get them written off again on their political influence. The returning officers must see minutely while scrutinising their nomination papers whether they have been paying various taxes of the state,whether or not they were ever convicted of any offence of moral turpitude whether they have deposited large amounts in the party fund on whose ticket they are contesting polls so on and so forth.
