The geopolitical landscape surrounding Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has entered a critical and volatile phase. Driven by a combination of domestic administrative missteps, economic grievances, and an aggressive external influence campaign, the region is facing unprecedented stress. What began primarily as localized friction over resource management and governance demands has increasingly been allowed to fester, creating an opening for hostile intelligence architectures chiefly India” to exploit native grievances.
The foundation of any stable state-society relationship rests upon trust, empathy, and the rule of law. Unfortunately, recent friction points in AJK have frequently been exacerbated by heavy-handed administrative responses and tactical misjudgments by law enforcement.
Resorting to kinetic measures, excessive tear-gassing, and aggressive policing may achieve short-term dispersal of crowds, but it fundamentally fails to resolve the underlying pain points. Force treats the symptoms while worsening the disease by living in illusions.
When citizens are met with state-backed coercion over legitimate socio-economic or administrative demands, it leaves deep psychological scars. This alienation builds structural resentment, converting ordinary citizens into cynical sceptics of state intent.
Suppressing public anger without addressing its root causes acts like capping a pressure cooker. The pressure continues to accumulate beneath the surface until it breaches containment, resulting in sudden, violent eruptions that carry immense societal and political costs.
Governance in sensitive frontier regions can not afford the luxury of administrative apathy. Healing the rift requires recognizing that the local population is fundamentally part of the national fabric, deserving of dialogue, economic relief, and political respect rather than containment through batons and bullets.
The local grievances provide the raw tinder for India. The external adversaries are actively supplying the spark. New Delhi has viewed Azad Jammu and Kashmir by extension, Pakistan’s administrative integration of its northern territories as a primary geopolitical obstacle. Therefore Sabotaging China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the top priority. AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan form the geographic nexus through which the Northern corridor of CPEC links Pakistan to China. By fueling instability in AJK, India seeks to project the region as a high-risk security hazard, aiming to deter foreign investment, stall infrastructure connectivity, and create permanent strategic vulnerability along Pakistan’s northern flank.
India is building a victimhood, narrative, and psychological warfare. The Indian intelligence networks have accelerated cognitive operations, weaponizing local grievances via targeted disinformation campaigns. The strategic goal is to invert reality, portraying the Pakistani state as an occupying force and manipulating the youth into believing that their economic and political salvation lies across the Line of Control (LoC). The question is if India is attempting to replicate a “Mukti Bahini” model?
The parallel to the events of 1971 in East Pakistan is a serious strategic consideration that merits rigorous analysis rather than dismissal. The historical playbook of cultivating a proxy, leveraging indigenous discontent, radicalizing a segment of the local populace, and orchestrating an armed insurgency under the guise of a “liberation” movement is a well-documented doctrine of Indian intelligence.
While the socio-political realities, geographic isolation, and distinct cultural fabric of AJK differ fundamentally from former East Pakistan, the strategic objective remains identical: to create an internal proxy force that can bleed the state, invite external intervention, and fracture the territorial integrity of Pakistan. Underestimating this design would be a grave strategic error. Adversaries do not need identical conditions; they only need unaddressed domestic grievances to execute subversion.
We must bring our House in Order as the situation in AJK has reached a juncture where policy inertia is no longer an option. The clock is ticking toward a critical threshold, and proactive measures must be taken immediately to preempt disaster.
The state must decisively abandon heavy-handed security paradigms in favour of political engagement. Grievances regarding subsidies, resource royalties, and local administrative representation must be addressed through sincere, transparent negotiations.
It is utmost important to win hearts and minds of people as security is ultimately a byproduct of civic alignment. Economic packages, educational investments, and transparent governance must be deployed to convince the people of AJK that their future, prosperity, and security are inextricably tied to a stable, progressive Pakistan The Intelligence and internal security apparatuses must intensify counter-intelligence operations to dismantle local cells funded, guided, or ideologically radicalized by hostile foreign agencies. Cutting off the financial and logistical lifelines of anti-state elements is vital to protecting the population from manipulation.
The administrative functionaries who resort to unnecessary escalation and excessive force must be held accountable. Restoring public trust requires demonstrating that the writ of the state protects its citizens rather than oppressing them.
Azad Jammu and Kashmir is not merely a geopolitical chessboard; it is home to resilient citizens who have stood as the frontline defence of the nation for decades. Alienating domestic misgovernance to alienate this vital population is playing directly into the hands of an adversarial strategy designed to choke CPEC and balkanize the country. Winning back the absolute trust of the people of AJK through genuine political accommodation, economic justice, and absolute security is the only path forward. The time to act decisively is now, before the accumulated friction reaches a point of no return.
