In the good old days whenever any political party had any score to settle with the ruling party and wanted to draw attention of the powers, its leaders held protest meetings at central places of the cities for instance, Chowk Yadgar Peshawar, Liaqat Bagh Pindi, Mochi Gate Lahore and Nisthar Park Multan to mention a few. They always made it a point to stage their protest rallies round about midnight after night prayers in order to ensure that the routine of daily chores of the common man wasn’t disturbed, road traffic was not jammed. In their speeches on the occasion the politicians vent their spleen on the powers that be and that was that any citizen who wanted to hear them assembled at that central place.
What a pity that, lately, hooliganism had got the better of old system of protest meetings in which due to frequent road blocks traffic jams have become the order of the day. In short these road blocks have become a public nuisance causing untold difficulty to the residents of the cities in which they are staged .
In the good old days the politicians would deliver speeches in the public meeting in a very dignified manner avoiding mud slinging on their political opponents and calling names. Today music bands have also been introduced which interspersed speeches with music tunes to keep the blood of participants warm so public meetings have, in a way, become musical concerts.
